Bild: Hand in Hand against Racism: Human Chain in Bochum, :bsz INTERNATIONAL

Racism is an issue that German society is confronted with on a daily basis. On June 18 and 19, the nationwide campaign/action „Hand in hand against racism – for human rights and diversity“ seeks to take a stand against xenophobia while emphasising humanity, diversity and open-mindedness.

According to Nils Padberg, coordinator of the human chain, Bochum has a long tradition of taking in and integrating people from different regions and countries. Furthermore, he thinks that  the residents have proven to be a force to be reckoned with when it comes to actively campaigning against grievances and social injustice. Around 100 institutions and associations, including the VfL Bochum, the Schauspielhaus and the senior mayor are supporting the campaign so far.

Kilometres of solidarity

The upcoming Saturday is supposed to become another marker in the campaign against nationwide anti-racism. The inner city of Bochum will be filled with people holding hands in order to demonstrate peacefully – thus applying collective pressure on society. The overall aim: Show that people will continuously demonstrate until refugees are provided with an ensured residence status and minimum living standards.

The human chain will start at 12 p.m. and is supposed to connect the Kirmesplatz, the central station and the town hall. At roughly 1 p.m., people and participants are invited to gather at the Dr.-Ruer-Platz where a final demonstration will take place. Afterwards, the place will host a festival, which is held by the Initiativkreis Flüchtlingshilfe Bochum (Refugee Relief Bochum), including cabaret, music, and theatre.

Take a stand yourself

Nils Padberg wants you to participate. According to him, the RUB displays how people from all over the world can live and work together peacefully as well as learn from each other: „Carry that into the city“. Most people are still needed at the Kirmesplatz.
